Do You Base Characters in Your Fiction on People You Know?

A brother-in-law recently read my latest collection of crime stories, Rage and Redemption in Alphabet City, and commented on several characters in the book that the same characteristics and or names as several family members. He thought that was cool!  My brother, on the other hand, got seriously miffed.

So, tell me: Have your friends and/or family members seen themselves in your work? How did they react?
